TITAN – The Rebirth

Mecwide was responsible for the restoration and reconstruction project of the old and centenary Titan, a project of APDL – Administração dos Portos do Douro, Leixões e Viana do Castelo, S.A. (Administration of the Ports of Douro, Leixões and Viana do Castelo)

In April 2012, there was a collapse and fragmentation of the Titan of the south dock following an accident and an explosion. All the possible fragments of the historic mechanism were picked up and stored in safety and 8 years later, in 2020 a new history started to be written – “THE REBIRTH OF TITAN”. Mecwide was the company chosen to embrace this historic and iconic project.

In the first phase, the wreckage of the historic crane of Leixões was transported to the Mecwide Production Unit, in the north of Portugal. Here, the cleaning, digitalization and recovery of the mechanisms were carried out.

In parallel with the rescue, cleaning and restoration work on the original components of the Titan, a Mecwide specialized team went ahead with the elaboration of the project for the manufacture of a replica, considering the use of the rehabilitated parts.

In addition to the recovery of the original mechanical components and preparing the project, Mecwide was also responsible for the manufacture, the structure assembly and the scenic lighting of Titan. Access paths and a circuit will be created along the structure, making it possible for the public to visit.
